The drizzle of rain was not enough to stop the 30 plus hipsters who showed up Sunday for the Ride Figueroa Bike event. The event was scheduled to raise awareness about the desire by some enthusiasts for bike lanes to be installed on Figueroa.
Many locals oppose the idea because of the negative impact they feel it will have on traffic. But at least a few hipsters who showed up for the event in a Prius think that the bike lanes are good for local businesses and are good for the environment as well.
“Look” said one of the Prius passengers “This is what gentrification is all about, making places cooler to live in and being green. I don’t live in Highland Park but I drive through it sometimes and if there were bike lanes it’d be cooler and I’d stop and eat more tacos”
Quite a few of the cyclists arrived to the event, which began at the small park across from the Bike Oven, in their cars. They claimed that they were just too tired to bike the whole way.
“Bike it all the way in this weather!?” exclaimed cyclist Shari N. “Who am I Lance Armstrong……..too soon?”
Another Bike Lane supporter, Jenni R. hoisted down her new Flying Pigeon Classic bike from her Honda Civic and was ready to roll. “I think more bike lanes are totally crucial to be more environmentally friendly. I mean I drive a Civic so it gets alot of miles to the gallon so I feel good about that and sure my bike was made in a factory in China but it looks super cute, it came with a basket!”
Another dude who did not want to be named, rolled up on his fixie and said he could care less about bike lanes, he just came for the donuts and to get some air in his tires.
