A tale of two coffee shops

Hipsters and coffee shops go together like vegans and nutritional yeast; the one can’t live without the other.   In Highland Park the two rival coffee shops are Cafe de Leche on York and Antigua Bread on Figueroa.   Each has a super loyal following.  Which one to choose?  We interviewed barristas  Brent T. and Keelie J. to help us make an uber informed decision.  (they’re both barristas in the Arts District downtown so they totally know coffee!)

Brent T.  Antigua by far has the better coffee.

Keelie J.  OMG!  You have got to be kidding.  Cafe de Leche brews Portland’s Stumptown  beans, so rich,  fully flavored.

Brent T.  Puh-leeze, the only good thing to come out of  Portland is that tv show…what’s it called?

Keelie J. Portlandia?

Brent T.  No, the other one…anyway,  Antigua has better coffee, it’s from Guatemala!  And the prices are waaayy less.

Keelie J.  True, Antigua is cheaper.   Howevs,  Cafe de Leche is soooo aesthetically pleasing.  I love the look of it, simple small tables, and a counter, I totally love minimalistic stuff, it’s like something out of Architecture Digest (sic).  And they have this super yummy Horchata con Espresso.

Brent J.  Ok you got me there.  That Horchata Con Espresso is loco bueno.  But the barristas making it have such ‘tude.    The peeps at Antigua are so chill and nice.  Sure there’s some cuties at Leche but lose the ‘tude ladies.  Look I’m more of a hippy hipster you know?  I like the peace and love you know, at Leche it’s coffee with the attitude for free, it’s just so lame and such bad karma, you know?

Keelie J.   I totes disagree.  I think the Leche team is super sweet, one time when I was there with my bestie they gave us a free shot of espresso because  they liked our leggings.   I mean how cute is that?  And they have Let’s Go travel books to peruse.  I’m going to Machu Picchu soon.

Brent T.  But it’s like they are trying too hard, you know?  And that’s hard to deal with for me because I don’t like people who try to hard… you know?  Sure, Leche is hipster in like the stereotypical hipster sense,  it’s like a tourist hipster,  Antigua is the more authentic hipster, like local hipster.   To put it another way Cafe De Leche is more airbnb and Antigua is more couchsurfer.

There you have it.  2 Hipsters with 2 different views.  How about this – when you’re on York give Cafe de Leche a shot, and when you’re on Fig hop on in to Antigua.  Then you can decide for yourself.
